2017 Edward Schoifet Family Law Award

In recognition of her contributions to the practice of Family Law, Deborah A. Rose, Esq., has been awarded the 2017 Edward Schoifet Family Law Award, to be presented by the Family Law Section of the Middlesex County Bar Association at the January 24, 2018 General Membership Dinner Meeting held at The Pines Manor in Edison. The Schoifet Award, the highest honor presented by the Family Law Section, commemorates the legacy of Edward Schoifet who passed away in 2006. Ed was considered the dean of the Middlesex County Family Bar and was recognized as a role model for all family law practitioners.

The Award is presented annually to a Family Law Practitioner who has been engaged in the practice for 15 years or more and who exemplifies those principles by which Ed practiced family law:  maintaining knowledge of past and present case law to advise clients thoroughly; analyzing the facts of each case in detail and diligently applying the law to those facts; presenting the issues and applicable law to the client in a manner appropriate to the client’s understanding; making purposeful efforts to settle the issues in fair and reasonable terms before resorting to litigation; fostering respect and courtesy for the bench and fellow attorneys; maintaining highest standards of integrity and professionalism; and exhibiting leadership in the Middlesex County or State Bar Association.

Deborah has a significant and highly distinguished history as a matrimonial law specialist. She began her career in 1985 as Law Clerk for the Honorable Richard S. Rebeck (retired), in the Family Part. She decided during her clerkship that she had an interest in specializing in family law matters. She entered private practice in 1986 with a large firm in Princeton, following which she has been a sole practitioner since 1994.

Her professional career includes significant Appellate practice in family law matters, and there are numerous published opinions reflecting her success. Throughout the years, she has been a presenter at various ICLE and Middlesex County Bar Association courses. She is one of a limited number of attorneys in the State who undertakes mandatory economic mediation for matters in which Domestic Violence Final Restraining Orders have been entered.

Deborah has an impressive history of volunteer work, including having previously served as a past member of the District VIII Ethics Committee and as a member and then as Chairperson of the District VIII Fee Arbitration Committee. She is a current Trustee of the New Jersey Lawyer’s fund for Client Protection.

For over twenty-five years, Deborah has also served as a panelist on the Middlesex County and Mercer County Early Settlement Programs. She provides pro bono legal representation to many Spanish-speaking referrals from Central Jersey Legal Services, Inc., and in recognition of her service, she received the Pro Bono Attorney of the Year Award in 2012.

She has donated her time for such organizations as Women Aware, Inc., of which she was a previous Trustee and President, and she served as a Trustee on the Board of Central Jersey Legal Services, Inc. She has also donated significant time and effort at Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple of which she is a member and previously served on its Board of Trustees.

Deborah and her husband, Jorge Buhler-Vidal, reside in North Brunswick, where they raised two sons.

Deborah enjoys international travel, the challenge of New York Times crossword puzzles and learning new languages.

Deborah is deservedly the recipient of the Edward Schoifet Family Law Award who like Edward Schoifet, represents all the best in being an effective, collegial, compassionate family law attorney.
